Cats need to visit the veterinarian at least once a year for a complete examination and booster shots.
First, your new kitten will require a series of vaccines given at 2,3 and 4 months of age.
This combination of vaccines will protects your kitten from panleukopenia (also referred to as feline distemper), calicivirus and rhinotracheitis.
These injections need to be followed up with booster shots during their annual examination.
In addition your cat should be checked for parasites that can cause discomfort and severs problems.
Problems such as ear mites or worms.
Ear mites are a common problem that is easily transmitted between cats. You may notice your cat scratching its ears or shaking its head, which are common symptoms of ear mites.
Tapeworms and roundworms are common parasites that can infect your cat. Your vet can easily diagnose this problem, and prescribe a suitable medication..
There are also two immune system viruses that could infect your cat or kitten;
Feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus..
There is a vaccination available for feline leukemia but not for feline immunodeficiency virus..
These are deadly viruses and your cat should be tested during it's annual exam.
Outdoor and stray cats are often the carrier of these infections..
To ensure that your cat does not become infected with these viruses, it is advisable to keep them indoors.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
